MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy about Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran who is at odds with her family about the journey of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend from the Army. Despite the persistence of a VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the love of a tough mother (Gloria Reuben), and an unexpected love interest, Merit’s cozy and dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the duo safe from the world. That is, until Merit’s grandfather (Ed Harris) – who lives in the family’s ancestral lake house – starts to go wrong and needs the one thing he’s been giving up… help. It’s essentially a buddy movie about complicated friendships, a fractured family, and the complex ways we process grief.
